Dobrudzha Wine Fest 2016 “threw a bridge” from the Danube to the Black Sea

For the fourth consecutive year the Dobrudzha Wine Fest brought together masters and lovers of homemade wine at the Market in Mall Varna. Hundreds of guests gathered by the fountain at the Mall to taste grape elixirs produced by masters from Northeastern Bulgaria, to enjoy songs and dances performed by folklore groups from the region, to see the ethnographic mini exhibitions and to take a bite from the typical dishes of Dobrudzha, prepared by the amateur cooks from the region.

The fest and competitions for best homemade wine involved representatives of three regions: Varna, Dobrich and Silistra. Along with the traditional participants from the towns Devnya and Balchik and the villages Kipra, Konstantinovo, Levski, Izgrev, Komarevo and Krapets, this winter a “bridge” between the Danube and the Black Sea was “thrown” by the guests from the community center in the village of Nova Cherna, Tutrakan Municipality. They had not only arranged an attractive ethnographic exhibition of unique tools which were once used to till vineyards, but also won one of the special prizes: that for the most cheerful taster, which was awarded to Veselin Vladimirov. Awards were also given to the youngest winemaker, the most active chain dance leader, the participant with most appearances at the fest, as well as to all community centers.

More than four hours the Market in Mall Varna echoed with the resounding voices of the singers, the rhythms of the chain dances formed by the folk performers and members of the audience, and the clinks of the glasses of guests enjoying the taste of homemade wine. Meanwhile, the jury from the Bulgarian Association of Professional Sommeliers was scrutinizing the aroma, taste and mellowness of over 50 elixirs, in order to distinguish the best among them. The competition was held in two categories: typical grape varieties of Dobrudzha, such as umie uno, lipa, white and red zayber, ardzhilyan, kondel, basarbyanka, yellow and white nohan, and European varieties, for respectively red and white wine.
